Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) searches for partners to demonstrate energy efficiency retrofit techniques
The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has recently issued a Request for Proposals (RfP) as it’s seeking partners to participate in the retrofit of a selected number of different domestic properties as part of its projected £100m Smart Systems and Heat (SSH) technology programme.
The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is a public-private partnership between global energy and engineering companies – BP, Caterpillar, EDF Energy, E.ON, Rolls-Royce and Shell – and the UK Government.
The programme mission is to deliver efficient heat and comfort to meet local requirements across the UK. As the institute reveals, given the scale of demand which the domestic housing stock places on the UK energy system, the refurbishment of existing dwellings to potentially reduce domestic energy consumption through improved thermal efficiency is an important element in developing cost-effective local energy systems.
Dr Grant Bourhill, the ETI’s Smart Systems and Heat Director, said: “Retrofitting existing homes is an important element in developing a cost-effective, practical solution for the delivery of heat and comfort. The challenge of introducing this to the UK housing stock is huge. Therefore we want to ensure we have solutions that are not only fit for purpose but that are economical and provide comfort to consumers.”
Domestic and non-domestic customers alike can take advantage of the impressive level of energy efficiency enabled by the HeatingSave Building Energy Management System, which allows user to save 20 to 30 percent on their gas and electricity bills by optimizing consumption levels across any building, depending on its specific heat-loss profile.
Plus, the system also includes automatic occupancy detection features, allowing the temperature to be reduced to a background when areas are not used and quickly brought up to temperature when they are being used.
It’s also very important to mention that HeatingSave can take an automatic decision on whether to use electricity or gas for heating during summer, and also enables users to set a night setback temperature, reducing the night heating by a few degrees to still keep 24/7 operations warm whilst saving energy and money.
