A measure is being proposed to raise energy efficiency in UK households – raise the VAT on energy. A new report says the UK government’s policies on energy and climate change must be rethought. The report came from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The OECD concluded that although current policies are resulting in some reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, they are not enough to meet longer term goals.

Today (September 15, 2011) EDF Energy announced it will raise gas prices by 15.4% and electricity prices by 4.5% from November 10. The company stated that the annual cost of a standard dual-fuel bill paid for by direct debit would rise to £1,165 from £1,051.

Professor John Hills has called for a new definition of the issue, where people with low incomes are forced into poverty by high fuel bills. His report discovered that in 2004, fuel-poor households faced a shortfall of £256 to heat their homes and avoid poverty, but in 2009 the figure rose to £402.

One of the MPs said the government should scrap a planned increase in fuel duty to help “hard-working, vulnerable Britons”.
