9.8% of all Reading households now living in fuel poverty
As energy bills keep going up on a yearly basis, more and more households across the UK are being pushed into fuel poverty and, unfortunately, that’s also the case across a slightly well off area of the country, namely Reading.
In fact, according to a recent news report, 9.8% of the 6,239 households in the borough were spending more than 10% of the household income on heating bills in 2011. This compares to 5,522 homes in West Berkshire (8.7%) and 4,412 in Wokingham (7.2%).
Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) figures released last month seem to indicate that the number of people in fuel poverty across the country in 2011 reached 4.5 million, a 250,000 drop on 2010. However, since the economic situation has not improved since 2011, not to mention the fact that energy bills have visibly increased over the same period, it’s likely that the number of people in this situation will actually increase.
