Energy efficiency targets for new homes in Wales get a serious cut

In a bid to support the Welsh economy, the country’s government has decided to actually cut the planned energy efficiency levels for new buildings, from the projected 40% to just 8%, thus reducing the overall costs of building a new home by around 4,000 pounds.

The ministers’ decision is said to be based on a clear and real need to balance the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with economic development. Furthermore, initial proposals to require new homes to be fitted with fire sprinklers would now be phased in between 2014 and 2016.

Unfortunately, even if the level of energy efficiency that houses will be required to attain has been lowered, that shouldn’t really be considered good news, given the fact that, on the long-term, home owners and renters will actually have to pay more on their energy bills.
