Energy firms urged to lower end-customer bills

The UK’s largest energy suppliers are being urged to lower bills for end-customers after receiving an unexpected windfall from the cuts to green levies imposed by the UK Government.

In fact, reports from the government suggest that consumers could be owed reductions of up to £23 a year on their energy bills, according to reports, along with a £50 cut agreed at the end of last year.

The Government has significantly reduced the sums energy suppliers had to pay under the Energy Company Obligation home insulation scheme and the Warm Home Discount scheme. Officials have now admitted that energy firms are ‘likely to be in a position to make greater savings than they had originally projected in December’.

The Big Six energy suppliers face a Competitions and Markets Authority probe to see if there are problems with competition in the UK energy market, with the results expected next year.
