Government plans for decarbonisation of heating come under fire due to huge costs

The UK government’s plans to decarbonise heating by fitting electric heat pumps in most homes by 2050 would cost around £12,000 per household or £300 billion in total, a report from think tank Policy Exchange has recently warned.

The figure takes into account the cost of upgrading the grid and building more than 100GW of new power generation to meet the extra demand for electricity, as well as more than £8,500 for the installation of each pump. The report lambastes this scheme as a “colossal waste of money” an urges the government to “put affordability at the heart of its decarbonisation strategy by shifting away from its focus on electric heat pumps to alternatives”.

A new strategy based on a “more balanced set of priorities and technologies – incorporating substantial improvements in energy efficiency, more efficient gas appliances, greener forms of gas, and alternative heat technologies” could deliver an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050 but at “substantially less cost to the consumer”, the paper has also revealed.

Energy management systems might represent a sizeable investment for any company, but the rapidly rising energy prices can actually deliver a very rapid return on investment, experts in the field have argued.

A recent paper on this topic has argued that over half of firms have appointed a senior director to manage energy spending and implement energy efficiency measures.

The range of energy saving programmes directors can vary largely, depending on the available funding, the company’s size, premises, site specifics.

However, regardless of the particular approach, directors who are serious about slashing their energy bills will need to consider retrofitting their premises in some way, whether we’re talking about putting in renewable energy measures or more complex Building Energy Management Systems.

An energy management and monitoring system can help companies stay on top of their energy usage and reduce their overall bills by running their light/heating systems in an optimum manner.
