Centrica has just announced today an increase in the price of electricity on the British Gas standard tariff that takes effect on 15th September and will affect 3.1m of our customers.
The energy supplier claims that the 12.5% electricity price rise this September reflects the increasing costs of energy policy, and delivery to customers’ homes since 2014.
This steep rise for customers on its standard tariff — the most common rate — comes against a fall in wholesale prices since the start of the year and sparked a political backlash, with party leaders branding it “extortionate” and accusing the company of taking advantage of its customers.
The changes will mean that, on average, customers who buy electricity and gas from British Gas on a standard tariff will have to shoulder a 7.3 per cent, or £76, rise in their annual bill to £1,120.
