Leisure Centres Can Cut Heating Costs & Reduce Carbon Emissions
Leisure centres are very busy places from early in the morning until late at night. They host a range of activities and classes for people in the local area wanting to keep fit and stay active. Activities such as swimming, fitness classes and indoor sports are often available at one-off prices or for a monthly fee for regulars.
Along with hosting these fun and sociable activities, comes high heating costs. The vast majority of leisure centres across the UK are open for more than 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, requiring the building to be heated the entire time. This unfortunately results in extremely high heating and energy bills.
However, there is a low-cost, energy saving solution that enables leisure centres to better run their building(s), save money on bills and reduce carbon emissions - HeatingSave’s building energy management system.
Cutting heating costs for leisure centres
HeatingSave’s building energy management system (BEMS) has the ability to better run any building, making it more energy efficient and cost-effective for you.
Leisure centres often open around 6am and close at 10pm, which means it requires heating for 16 of the 24 hours in a day, which is considerably longer than the average business that operates 9-5.
The BEMS is able to provide you with an accurate heating diary from the calendar of the room booking system (explained in the section below). This allows it to automatically avoid heating/cooling areas that are not used, which is especially useful for leisure centres during periods when there are no bookings and areas of the building are not in use.
BEMS reduces energy bills
HeatingSave’s building energy management system includes a heat-loss algorithm that learns the heat-loss profile of each heating zone within your building to heat or cool the room at the latest possible moment in time. It understands both the outside and inside temperatures, allowing the room or area to be heated closer to the time of use if it is already warm (saving energy) while allowing the room or area to be heated earlier if the current temperature is lower. The BEMS optimises your energy usage meaning you only heat the building when absolutely necessary, while still maintaining maximum comfort levels. For example, a spin class would possibly require the temperature to be lower than that of a pilates class; the BEMS has the ability to recognise this using the room booking system so therefore can adjust accordingly.
HeatingSave’s automatic occupancy detection sensors lower the temperature (or turn the heating off) when areas are not used and then quickly bring them back to temperature when they sense that an area is now occupied again. This feature is particularly useful for areas within the leisure centre with variable occupancy, such as toilets, changing rooms or unbooked rooms.
Leisure centre room booking made easy
Our advanced room booking system is a fantastic feature for leisure centres, allowing them to have complete control over the buildings’ heating patterns and room bookings - all in one simple and easy-to-use system.
The room booking system links in with your heating diary to only heat or cool areas when used, according to when rooms are booked. It produces an automatic calculation of heating times and temperatures to match room bookings. This means if your main hall is booked out from 8am until 12pm, but then isn’t booked again until 3pm, the heating system and room booking system will automatically work in conjunction to bring the room temperature down until the 3pm booking. This saves your leisure centre money and energy, helping it to become an efficiently-run, environmentally friendly leisure centre.
