New public consultation launched into energy efficiency across the EU

The European Union has launched a new public consultation on its Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, aiming at collecting public feedback on the set of rules aiming at improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

Currently, buildings account for around 40% of the EU’s energy consumption with older buildings being much less energy-efficient. By improving energy efficiency, the EU could reduce its energy consumption by 5-6%, reports suggest.

Under the 2010 Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, energy performance certificates must be included in all advertisements for the sale or rental of buildings, while EU countries must also establish inspection schemes for heating and air conditioning systems and all new buildings must be nearly zero-energy by the end of 2020.

EU countries must also set minimum energy performance requirements for new buildings and renovations.
